Low Vision Information
"Low Vision Care" is an optometric specialty dealing with the examination and optical treatment of patients with severe vision disabilities. Low vision patients generally cannot reach their full potential with ordinary eye glasses, so telescopic, microscopic and other sophisticated optical devices are used to enhance the image on the retina of patients with partial sight. Many patients with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases can be given useful vision for specific tasks like reading by seeing an optometric low vision specialist. Low vision aids include such products as magnifiers, closed circuit television systems, electronic reading machines, microscopic/reading eyewear, reading telescopes, auto focus eyewear, computer and Internet access technology, talking appliances, filters, sunglasses and glare control, and task lighting and magnification lamp combinations.
