George S Novalis, MD George S. Novalis, M.D. is an ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon who was invited by the medical community of Tucson to establish the first center for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous in Southern Arizona in 1974. He received his Medical Degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1967. After finishing his residency at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1971 and serving active duty in the United States Armed Forces, he completed additional post-graduate studies in medical and surgical treatment of the retina and vitreous at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

In 1975, Dr. Novalis established the first retina-vitreous surgery program at St. Joseph's Hospital. He also set up the retina-vitreous program at Northwest Hospital in 1993. In addition, he participated in developing these services at University Medical Center and the VA Hospital and is actively involved in teaching at UMC as Clinical Assistant Professor. Dr. Novalis maintains privileges at all Tucson hospitals.

Dr. Novalis has a sound reputation as a pioneer in his field, and has introduced new services to Tucson including the Argon Laser, the Diode Laser, Ultrasonography, Fluorescein Angiography, and Digital ICG Choroidal Angiography. He also networks nationally with other retinal specialists.

Dr. Novalis has 43 years of experience in providing outstanding retinal care to Tucson and its neighboring communities. He is Board Certified in Ophthalmology, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Arizona Ophthalmological Society, and the Vitreous Society. He accepts patient referrals by other eye care professionals and physicians and is available to provide care for anyone with a history of retinal problems or in need of a second opinion. Dr. Novalis accepts Medicare Assignment and is a participating provider for all area health plans, including including AHCCCS and TRI-CARE.
